The Movers Have Arrived: Now What Should You Do?

hero image

All the boxes are packed, your moving snacks are set aside, and the movers are arriving at your house. Now all you have to do is figure out what you’re supposed to be doing while they move your boxes onto the truck.

Prepare Ahead of Time

First of all, you want to be prepared for their arrival. If you are the one who is packing everything up, make sure you’re finished before they get there. Don’t forget to set aside your essentials box so it doesn’t accidentally get put on the truck.

Secondly, you’ll need to know where they can park and how long they can park there while they are loading and unloading the truck.

Finally, make sure the path from your house to their truck is clear so the movers don’t trip.

Be Kind to Them

Another thing you can do while the movers are there is simply be kind to them:

  • Welcome them to your home.
  • Politely show them what isn’t going on the truck and which boxes are fragile.
  • Let them use the bathroom if need be. Don’t hide your cat in the only bathroom, and if you do have a cat chilling in a room, let them know.
  • Ask them if they would like something to eat or drink. Chances are they will get hungry and thirsty carrying all of those beds and boxes to the truck.

Corral Children & Pets

If you have children keep them safely out of the way. It might be worth it to hire a babysitter to take them to the park while the truck is being loaded. (For more tips on moving with young children, check out our post Moving with Children.)

The same thing goes for any pets you might have. It’ll be safer and much less stressful for everyone, including your animals, if they are contained or away from the hubbub. (We also have posts filled with tips for moving with dogs, cats, and birds.)

Stay Out of the Way Without Disappearing

While this might seem like the ideal time to run a few errands, it’s a good idea to stay close to home in case the movers have questions or forms for you to sign. If you do need to leave for a bit

  • have a friend stay in your stead
  • let them know how to contact you
  • and make sure you’re back before they are done.

Offer to Help

If the idea of twiddling your thumbs while someone is doing all of the hard work makes you really uncomfortable, you can offer to help. Just don’t be upset if they turn you down. The people moving your furniture have done this hundreds of times so they have it down to an art. They know the best and safest ways to carry heavy boxes, couches, or your heirloom armoire to the truck.

We know it can feel weird to be standing around while other people are doing all of the hard work. But you can trust us, we know what we are doing. So if you would like help with your move contact us for a quote today. We won’t judge you if you step aside and let us do the heavy lifting.

I bought a new fridge, and the delivery people said, "there's no way we can take your huge fridge up the stairs." So I called Hendra Moving and Andrew came out with his tape measure, double checked and said, "yes, we can!" Today, Kelly and Ryan showed up and got the job done in style! Took a bit of maneuvering, but they made it look easy (and I know it really wasn't easy!). Thanks Hendra!
