1. Plan Ahead with a checklist:
Seems like a no-brainer, but make a plan. Make a list or download one off the internet. This list will have a 4-6 week plan that will let you know what you need to be doing in order to make the big day go easily. Things like changing your utilities, forwarding mail, or packing your DVD collection.
2. Pack a weekend kit and keep it with you:
Even with the best moving company, it will still take a few days for you to unpack everything and feel settled again. Pack a weekend bag with everything you would take for a weekend trip to another country: glasses, prescriptions, cell phone charger, clothes, etc.
3. Have your paperwork sorted:
Everyone has paperwork. From bank statements to your kids grade 5 art work, you want it to arrive with you at your new home. Even if it is in shoe boxes, mark it clearly that it is important and keep all of them together. I can not count the amount of calls I have taken from customers who call in a panic insisting that we have some of their paperwork. 9 times out of 10, they will call back sheepishly in a day or so and apologize profusely because it turned up. This stress can easily be eliminated by herding all of your documents into one place, marking them clearly, and making it clear to your movers that they need to go to room “X” on the other side.
4. Have the right tools for the job:
Boxes, Markers, Tape. Those are the basics, but you will probably need some other tools too. If you are taking apart your bed, you will likely need either a screwdriver or Allen key set. Additionally, twist ties or masking tape are great for tying up loose cords from your TV, lamps, etc…
5. Hire a pro:
Save your buddy with a truck from yet another weekend of work. Save the beer and Pizza. Save the madness of a rental truck lot on the last day of the month.
