What you Should Do the Day Before You Move

hero image

The day of the move is almost here. By now you should have the house packed up with only a few last minute tasks left to do. Hopefully, you have everything from our previous post What to Do the Week Before You Move taken care of. The steps below are what you should do the day before you move to make it as stress-free as possible.

Walk around the old house.

Make sure you have grabbed everything you own so nothing gets left behind. Check in closets and in/on top of cupboards to ensure no belongings have been missed.

What you Should Do the Day Before You Move

Gather all your important documents together.

Be aware of exactly where they are! This includes things like your passport, your birth certificate, your college diploma/degree, and other papers that are hard to replace. Losing these would greatly add to the stress of moving, so make sure you always have these stored in a safe place.

Store all your family photos in a safe place.

Losing all your family memories is one of the worst things that could happen during a move. Make sure to avoid this by storing them together in a well-labeled box. Be aware of where this box is and if possible, take it in your car with you during the move.

Pack yourself and your family a ‘sleepover’ bag.

Confirm that you have all the essentials in there. This includes everything you are likely to need at the new place such as a toothbrush, brush, change of clothes, pyjamas, etc. When you get to the new place you will appreciate having all of these things accessible and available! You probably won’t get through all your unpacking the day you arrive (Spoiler: You might be too tired to even start!) so it’ll come in handy to have everything you need available in a single bag.

Get ahold of the keys to your new house.

If you don’t yet have them, make sure you have arranged a time with the realtor/landlord to meet you with them. You don’t want to be stuck waiting with all your stuff while someone brings the keys.

Organize your boxes so all the bedding is together and labeled.

Unless you want to spend your first night in the new home sleeping on an uncovered mattress or digging through all your possessions make sure you have everyone’s bedding in an easily accessible and marked box.

Prepare an essentials pack for the big day.

Fill it with water, snacks and some easy meals so you have food on hand when you need it.

Last but not least:

Take some time to relax and enjoy your evening.

This is the last night you will spend in the home you have been living in. Take some time to reflect on the memories made and get a good night’s rest to prepare for the big day!

I bought a new fridge, and the delivery people said, "there's no way we can take your huge fridge up the stairs." So I called Hendra Moving and Andrew came out with his tape measure, double checked and said, "yes, we can!" Today, Kelly and Ryan showed up and got the job done in style! Took a bit of maneuvering, but they made it look easy (and I know it really wasn't easy!). Thanks Hendra!
